Vietnamese Flat White

The Vietnamese Coffee Maker
Today I experienced heaven.

I had my first Vietnamese flat white at Saigon to Paris Cafe in Petone.

The most well known Vietnamese coffee drink is a concoction of dark coffee and condensed milk over ice. This drink is called ca phe sua da which means iced milk coffee.

If you exclude the ice, the drink is called ca phe sua nong - hot milk coffee. The proportion is about 1/3 sweetened condensed milk to coffee (or to taste). (source)

We had it warm. It was truly delicious but only as we like our coffee sweet, if you don't like sweet coffee this won't be to your taste at all!

I am very keen to see if I can replicate this with my stove top espresso maker, some dark roast coffee and condensed milk at home. If you ever see it advertised at your local cafe, give it a try and let me know what you think.

  1. Thanks for the tip!! I drank this every day when I was in Cambodia and Vietnam years ago, then came home and failed horribly trying to recreate it. Off to Petone tomorrow, methinks ...
