I love the beach. Stormy, windy, raining, hot, calm -whatever the weather I love it. (as long as I'm dressed appropriately and have coffee if it's cold/wet/stormy). It calms me and enables me to make important decisions with more ease.
It has something to do with the sound of the waves crashing onto the rocks and the repetitiveness of the action of the waves. It is the constancy of the motion that calms me... There will always be another wave, it may be bigger or smaller than it's predecessor but it will come. Always. There is no doubting it, there is no fear that it will not deliver. It will. Always.
The feel of the sand underfoot, the sounds of the sea, the barrenness of the coast. The unwavering force of nature. It is a reminder that the fears I carry with me are not all encompassing, they are transient things, driftwood in my life. Focussing on the rhythm of the waves and the inevitable beaching of the driftwood. It clears your mind and focuses it on the important.
It is a rare day when the mere sight of the sea doesn't lift my spirits. It is one of the reasons I love living here. We are within half an hour of the sea. A sure-fire way of lifting my spirit and cleansing it.
So if you think I am in a foul mood, drive me to the beach and buy me a coffee and let me sit/walk and mull things over.
